Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about sleep apnea and what to expect at Sleep Easy Centre.
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The most common form, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), happens when the muscles in the throat relax and block the airway.
What are the signs I should look out for?
Common signs include loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, morning headaches, dry mouth on waking, daytime fatigue, and trouble concentrating. If a partner has noticed pauses in your breathing at night, that’s worth mentioning to us too.
How is sleep apnea diagnosed?
Diagnosis starts with a sleep study. The most reliable is polysomnography, an overnight study that tracks breathing, oxygen levels, and sleep stages. In some cases, an at-home sleep study may be appropriate.
What happens if I'm diagnosed with sleep apnea?
Most patients are treated with positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy — commonly CPAP — which keeps the airway open using a small machine, tube, and mask. Your pressure settings are calibrated specifically for you.
Is CPAP the only treatment option?
CPAP is the most common and effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, but lifestyle changes — like weight management, adjusting sleep position, and reducing alcohol intake — can also help manage symptoms. We’ll talk through what’s right for your situation.
